Welcome to the Odysseus's Ithaca : The Discovery
Journy to the heart of Homer
As an enthusiast of Hellenic civilisation, the author has spent years studying Homer and the so-called Ithaca question, wich simply comes down to the following: where exactly is Odysseus's Ithaca, the home to wich Odysseus returned after years of wandering?
There is no doubt today that Homer described historic events. The issue on which professionals disagree is concerning the proportion of reality, mythology and poetic imagination in Homer's works. Myth was a part of Hellenic thinking, the Hellen's religion, literature, history, in facts their spiritual life. Reality and myth are interwined. Myth was the means of expression for the Hellens.
In order to understand messages from such ancient history, alienated by numerous later generations, it is necessary to feel a resonance with the era, not to think like a person from the 19th or 21th century, but as a Hellene at the dawn of western civilisation. Being a Hellenist in the 21th century means taking a time mashine three thousand years back trough the whirlwind of time, skipping everything that has happend between "now" and "then" (such
as migrations, changes of names and toponyms) and with Homer's Odyssey in hand as a compass and guide, to land on the beaches of Odysseus's Ithaca.
